Oklahoma’s State Capitol is one of the most beautifully decorated public buildings in America. The majesty and excellence of the Capitol today is the result of an incredible journey. Oklahoma’s first Capitol building was in a rented courthouse in the temporary capitol of Guthrie after Oklahoma after Oklahoma joined the Union as the 46th state in 1907. An election by the people in 1910 made OKC the permanent capitol, but the city was not ready to host the seat of the state government. At first, government offices were housed in hotels, dilapidated school building and vacant warehouse. This is the story of the move of the state capitol from Guthrie to OKC and of the unique Oklahoma leaders who value expressions of culture and beauty and have worked together to make certain that the Capitol is restored to its intended dignity and is finely adorned with art of the highest museum quality. This is the story of the People’s capitol—the Capitol of Oklahoma.
